1. Introduction

Last updated: May the 4th 2026

Website: skrollit.net

Operator contact: hello@skrollit.net

Welcome to skrollit.net ("we", "us", "our"). We are committed to protecting your personal data and respecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect when you visit skrollit.net, why we collect it, how we use it, and what rights you have in relation to it. This site is operated from Sweden, European Union, and hosted by Infomaniak Network SA, based in Switzerland. Switzerland has been granted an adequacy decision by the European Commission, meaning it provides a level of data protection equivalent to that of the EU under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, Regulation (EU) 2016/679). We encourage you to read this policy carefully. By continuing to use skrollit.net, you acknowledge that you have read and understood it.

2. Who We Are (Data Controller)

For the purposes of the GDPR and applicable data protection law, the data controller is:

  • Contact: hello@skrollit.net
  • skrollit.net

If you have any questions about how we handle your personal data, please contact us at the address above.

3. What skrollit.net Is

skrollit.net is an informational and recreational website that visually showcases the scale of things — for example, the depth of the ocean rendered as a scrollable 100,000-pixel-long page, the layers of the Earth, historical timelines such as the fictional chronology of Tolkien's world of Arda, and similar content. The site does not require registration, login, or the submission of any personal information to access its content.

Some content on skrollit.net may depict natural phenomena, deep-sea creatures, or historical subjects that some visitors — particularly younger children — may find unsettling. We do not publish content intended for adults only, but we recommend parental guidance for young children. skrollit.net is not directed at children under the age of 13. See Section 10 for more details.

4. Data We Collect

We collect a minimal amount of data, detailed below. We do not collect your name, email address, or any directly identifying personal information unless you contact us voluntarily.

4.1 User Preferences (Local Storage)

To improve your experience, skrollit.net saves certain preferences directly in your browser's local storage. Currently this includes:

  • Unit system preference (metric or imperial)

Future preferences may include display themes (e.g. dark/light mode), language settings, and similar site behaviour options.

Local storage data is stored entirely on your own device and is never transmitted to our servers. It is not a cookie, but it functions similarly for the purpose of retaining preferences between visits. You can clear this data at any time through your browser settings.

4.2 Analytics Data (Matomo — Self-Hosted)

We use Matomo, an open-source web analytics platform, to understand how visitors use skrollit.net. Crucially, Matomo is self-hosted on our own infrastructure — meaning your data is never sent to Matomo's company or any third-party analytics service. It runs in fully cookieless mode: it sets no cookies and stores no persistent identifier for you.

The following data may be collected by Matomo:

Data TypeDetails
IP addressAnonymised before storage (three of four octets removed)
Browser type and versione.g. Firefox 120, Chrome 119
Operating systeme.g. Windows, macOS, Android
Referring URLThe page you visited before arriving at skrollit.net
Pages visitedWhich pages of skrollit.net you viewed
Time and date of visitTimestamp of each page view
Approximate geographic locationCountry/region level only, derived from anonymised IP
Screen resolutionUsed to optimise layout
Approximate visit activityA rough, aggregate sense of engagement; because tracking is cookieless, this is imprecise and not tied to any identifier

We do not use Matomo to build individual user profiles, track you across other websites, or share your data with any third party.

4.3 Server Logs

Like all web servers, our hosting provider Infomaniak may automatically record standard server log data, including IP addresses, request timestamps, and HTTP response codes. These logs are used for security and operational purposes and are governed by Infomaniak's own privacy policy.

4.4 Future: Advertising

We may in the future introduce advertising on skrollit.net — for example, through a service such as Google AdSense. Should this happen, advertising partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve relevant ads and measure their performance. This would involve third-party data processing beyond what is described in this policy.

We will update this Privacy Policy and our Cookie Policy before introducing any advertising, and we will request fresh consent where required by law.

5. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

Under the GDPR, we must have a lawful basis for processing personal data. The bases we rely on are:

  • Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) — for cookieless analytics via Matomo, to understand how the site is used and improve its content and performance. We have assessed that this interest is not overridden by your rights, given that Matomo is self-hosted, runs cookieless, anonymises IP addresses, stores no persistent identifier, and shares no data with third parties.
  • Legal obligation (Article 6(1)(c)) — to the extent that server logs are required for legal, security, or abuse-prevention purposes.

6. How We Use Your Data

We use the data we collect for the following purposes:

  • To display the site correctly and remember your preferences across visits
  • To analyse aggregate usage patterns and improve the site's content and performance
  • To monitor and maintain the security and stability of the site
  • To comply with legal obligations where applicable

We do not use your data for automated decision-making or profiling.

7. Data Retention

DataRetention Period
Local storage preferencesUntil you clear your browser data
Matomo analytics data180 days (rolling), then automatically purged
Server logsAs determined by Infomaniak's infrastructure policy (typically 30–90 days)

8. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other third party, except:

  • Infomaniak Network SA — as our hosting provider, they may process server log data as a data processor on our behalf. They are bound by a Data Processing Agreement and comply with Swiss data protection law (nFADP), which is equivalent to GDPR standards.
  • Legal authorities — if required by applicable law, court order, or governmental authority.

9. International Data Transfers

skrollit.net is operated from Sweden (EU) and hosted in Switzerland. As noted above, Switzerland holds a formal EU adequacy decision, so transfers to Infomaniak's servers do not require additional safeguards under GDPR.

If we introduce third-party advertising or other services in the future that involve transfers outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland, we will disclose this and implement appropriate safeguards (e.g. Standard Contractual Clauses).

10. Children's Privacy

skrollit.net is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. Some content on the site (such as depictions of deep-sea creatures, extreme geological scales, or historical timelines involving dark subject matter) may not be suitable for young children. We recommend that parents and guardians supervise children's use of the site.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at hello@skrollit.net and we will take steps to delete that data promptly.

11. Your Rights Under GDPR

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Right of access — You may request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification — You may request correction of inaccurate data.
  • Right to erasure ("right to be forgotten") — You may request deletion of your personal data where no overriding legal basis exists.
  • Right to restriction — You may request that we restrict processing of your data in certain circumstances.
  • Right to data portability — You may request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
  • Right to object — You may object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Right to withdraw consent — Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it at any time without affecting prior processing.
  • Right to lodge a complaint — You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Sweden, this is the Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY): https://www.imy.se.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at hello@skrollit.net. We will respond within 30 days.

Note: because we collect very little individually identifying data (and anonymise what we do collect), we may not always be able to identify data relating specifically to you.

12. Security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the data we process against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Our analytics infrastructure is self-hosted and not exposed to third-party vendors. However, no method of transmission over the internet is entirely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, when we introduce new features, advertising, or when legislation changes. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.

For significant changes, we will display a notice on the site. We encourage you to review this page periodically.

14. Contact

If you have any questions, concerns, or requests regarding this Privacy Policy or your personal data, please contact us at:

hello@skrollit.net

We aim to respond to all enquiries within 30 days.

This Privacy Policy applies solely to skrollit.net and does not cover any third-party websites that may be linked from our pages.
